137. Thinking about Reassurance

This time I will think about peace of mind. Safety is to protect the body, and security is to keep the mind in a peaceful and stable state. People experience various things in their daily lives and leave them as experiences. Experience positive and negative events and accumulate them as an experience while creating various emotions.

People develop negative emotions through negative experiences. Negative emotions include feelings of sadness, anger, fear, anxiety, regret, dissatisfaction, tension, disgust, shame, contempt, jealousy, inferiority, resentment, giving up, apathy, emptiness, discouragement, and loneliness. In particular, it can be said that fear and sadness maintain mental stability by forgetting that they are the characteristics of living things.

“Fear” is an emotion that imagines death, and “anxiety” is an unavoidable state due to a physiological phenomenon. “Disgusting feelings” is an alert function that avoids things that are dangerous to human survival. Therefore, “fear,” “anxiety,” and “dislike” are physiological reactions that cause strong negative emotions for humans.

Now let’s focus on the characteristics that we forget. The act of forgetting is one of the major challenges in learning. Memory includes sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. (For the mechanism of memory, refer to Episode 50 “Remembering Disasters”.) People memorize what they read with their eyes as short-term memory, and then organize it in their brains. The contents are retained as long-term memory. In learning memory, it is recorded in the cerebrum as declarative memory. This declarative memory, as known from the forgetting curve of Ebbinghaus, halves the amount of memory in a certain period of time. On the other hand, the experience experienced through the five senses is memorized in the amygdala and cerebellum as non-declarative memory. I think that the susceptibility reaction that we are studying through the experience of disasters by VR will be our memory.

In any case, memories with negative emotions are forgotten in order to maintain mental stability. This forgotten property is necessary for human beings to keep their minds stable as living things. Therefore, in the safety education we work on, it is necessary to recognize that it is human beings who forget what they have learned as human biological characteristics, and to implement the educational curriculum in consideration of these human characteristics. In order to maintain peace of mind, it is necessary to learn and consider the characteristics of people and work on safety and reassurance.
